Mumbai, 13 March: The Indian film song Naatu Naatu from SS Rajamouli’s “RRR” is the first to receive an Oscar. The music made history when it won the Best music award for the first time ever, coming from an Indian movie.
Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava provided the vocals for the song, which was composed by MM Keeravani and featured words by Chandrabose. It was released in March 2022, and after winning the Oscar, its fame skyrocketed.
The music had to outperform the other contenders in the category, which included This is a Life, Lift Me Up, Hold My Hand, and Applause (from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Tell It Like a Woman, and Top Gun Maverick. (Everything Everywhere All at Once).
“I’m grateful, Academy. “I grew up listening to the Carpenters, and now here I am with the Oscars,” Keeravani said in his acceptance address. There was only one wish on my thoughts… ‘RRR’ has to win, the pride of every Indian, and must put me on top of the world.

Ram Charan, who played the lead in the movie, was overjoyed and couldn’t stop beaming after Keeravani and Chandrabose’s “Naatu Naatu” won an Oscar. The “RRR” group spilled into the foyer, already planning their post-Oscars celebration, and Charan described it as feeling “like an out-of-body experience” after seeing the song’s energetic live performance tonight.
The original song Oscar was previously awarded by “Jai Ho” by Indian composer A.R. Rahman for the 2009 British film “Slumdog Millionaire” by Danny Boyle. But over the course of the category’s nearly 90-year history, the overwhelming majority of winners have been English-language songs from Hollywood movies.
The hit song, which is also known as “Naacho Naacho” in Hindi, “Naattu Koothu” in Tamil, “Halli Naatu” in Kannada, and “Karinthol” in Malayalam, became a well-known breakout hit as “RRR” mania swept the world last year.
